About the painting…
When we think of Hanukkah we envision the warmth of the Hanukkah candles, family getting together, festivities, and a season of miracles. Often, we forget that freedom was never free. Thus, the title “FREEdom isn’t FREE.” This piece is about justice and liberation. We owe our celebration of Hanukkah to a few rebels, who had the guts to stand up to a very oppressive leadership that far outweighed their primitive military force. However, with Adonai’s help and the courage and wisdom of the few, the battle was won with ordinary archers.
“The valley’s eastern slope came alive with the main Judean force, which smashed into the Seleucid flank while the third and fourth attacking units moved in from the north and east. Jewish archers killed Apollonius; and his leaderless, trapped, and totally confused men were left to fend for themselves in a type of battle they had not known…” (Bell, Kelly)
Remember that Freedom is never free, and it requires us to stand up for what we believe in.
The bible verse is from Exodus 15:11. The word Maccabee means hammer in Aramaic but is also an acronym for Mi Chamocha BaEylim Adonai, Who is like You among the heavenly powers? The answer to the rhetorical question is: “Ein kamocha—There is none like You!”
