The Awesome and Fearsome Day is a spiritual meditation on the opening words of Unetaneh Tokef, one of the most powerful prayers of the High Holy Days. The Hebrew words encircle the composition, creating a sacred ring of prayer and drawing the viewer into the solemn atmosphere of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
At the center is a richly colored pomegranate, an enduring Jewish symbol of abundance, righteousness, and the many mitzvot associated with its numerous seeds. Its deep red interior suggests both the vitality of life and the profound introspection of the Days of Awe. Emerging from and surrounding the pomegranate is the shofar, whose ancient call awakens the soul, summons us to repentance, and calls us to remember our relationship with God.
